Michael Owen has stated that, before and after Manchester United’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday, he felt that Erik ten Hag’s men were ‘still behind’ the likes of Arsenal in the Premier League.

In recent months, with Arsenal and Manchester City trading blows in the Premier League title race, those at Old Trafford felt they had a chance to possibly creep in from behind.

But Owen shared that Manchester United ‘hadn’t really got me out of my seat’, even before that Anfield humiliation and he stands by his claim and how they have a ‘long way to go’ when comparing them to the Premier League’s top-two.

Last week, Manchester United secured a 2-0 win over Newcastle United to win the League Cup at Wembley and their fans were in party mode

The calls from the Man United players were that they were ‘one trophy down’ and there were ‘three to go’ Well, that smirk was wiped off by Jurgen Klopp’s rampant Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta is further in his project than ten Hag, who only joined in the summer, and whilst Owen admitted that he has been ‘really impressed’ by the progress the Dutchman has made, he didn’t change his mind about the team, despite that Liverpool loss, as he told Premier League Productions (05/03/23 at 6:50 pm).

We mustn’t all of a sudden think ‘oh, they are title contenders and they are going to win everything’,” said Owen. “They are still a little bit behind the likes of Manchester City.

“You could argue Arsenal and teams like that, they are hunting down. Although, Arsenal have gone again. In this great run that they had, they hadn’t got me out of my seat by thinking ‘this club is going to take the Premier League by storm say next season’.

“I have been really impressed by the progress Manchester United have made. But there is still a long way to go, but that was before today’s result. Obviously, today’s result makes you think that more.”

ARTETA-LIKE PATIENCE IS NEEDED

This result and performance will bring its own noise, nothing more needs to be said given how woeful it was.

But those in the Old Trafford boardroom will, no doubt, be patient with ten Hag, just like Arsenal were with Mikel Arteta and look where they are heading
