While Jakub Kiwior will make his professional debut, Arsenal have not brought Kieran Tierney, Leandro Trossard, or Eddie Nketiah with them on the trip.
For their matchup with Sporting CP in the Round of 16 of the Europa League, Arsenal has brought a strong team with them. In order to maintain momentum and fresh legs for the Premier League title run-in, Mikel Arteta will be eager to rest a few of his key players before the away game.
Due to illnesses and injuries, a few players remained in London. Leandro Trossard and Eddie Nketiah are both dealing with injuries, and Kieran Tierney has not traveled. In Portugal, during his pre-game press conference, Arteta was questioned about the pair.
Arteta responded, “Let’s see how they evolve, obviously, we have had a few issues in the last few days. Let’s see how they progress,” when asked about the injured pair’s chances to play at the weekend. We’re working to make room for everyone and get everyone prepared as much as we can for tomorrow.
Gabriel Jesus has since started training with full contact, which has pleased Arsenal supporters. Arteta continues to be circumspect in his dealings with the Brazilian. Although Trossard and Nketiah are currently absent, the manager does not have any immediate plans to bring the forward back into action.
Regarding Jesus, Arteta said, “We’ll try not to rush him back, we’ll try to make a fair assessment between what he needs and when he’s comfortable, and we’ll try to give the team a boost that they’ll need in the coming weeks. Everything is going well, but he needs some time to build up his self-assurance and physical fitness so that he can compete with an open mind. We will throw him in once he is free to do so.
The team will make numerous personnel changes for the match against Sporting CP. Aaron Ramsdale will be replaced by Matt Turner, and Arteta might give Jakub Kiwior his full central defender debut. Gabriel Magalhaes could be replaced by the Pole, giving the Brazilian much-needed rest.
William Saliba’s replacement, Rob Holding, could start; Arteta will need to choose his full-backs. The manager is in a little bit of a pickle because of Tierney’s absence. Takehiro Tomiyasu might be used at left-back while Oleksandr Zinchenko is still on the bench. Ben White ought to be their right back in that situation.
In the middle of the field, Jorginho should take the place of Thomas Partey, and Granit Xhaka should replace Martin Odegaard. In the midfield three, Fabio Vieira might start on the right side. This is Arsenal’s best option for this midweek match because of their lack of depth in central midfield.
Gabriel Martinelli could set the tone for Arsenal’s attack. Given that the winger will start on the right, Reiss Nelson has given the manager no reason to keep him on the bench. The option on the left might change to Emile Smith Rowe. Bukayo Saka will probably take a well-earned break, though he could enter the game from the bench if necessary.
Predicted Arsenal XI: Turner; Ben White, Holding, Kiwior, Tomiyasu; Vieira, Jorginho, Xhaka; Nelson, Martinelli, Smith Rowe
