Arsenal transfer target has just broken a scoring record held by Real Madrid star Eden Hazard.
The Canadian international’s achievement was shared on Twitter by Fabrizio Romano last night.
Lille took on Lyon in Ligue 1 yesterday as both sides looked to improve their hopes of qualifying for Europe.
The 23-year-old must have thought he’d earned his side all three points with ten minutes to play.
Jonathan David’s second-half hat-trick put Lille 3-1 up, but it was former Arsenal man Alexandre Lacazette that spoiled the party.
He continued his brilliant season on his return to France by scoring a late brace to share the spoils.
Although he’ll be disappointed not to have won the match, David did achieve his own little piece of Lille history.
“Jonathan David becomes the best goal scorer in the history of Lille in the 21st century with 52 goals — he scored vs Lyon tonight,” Romano tweeted.
“Born in 2000, David makes history and surpasses Eden Hazard.”
Arsenal target Jonathan David breaks Hazard scoring record
David is in superb form this season, scoring 19 goals in 26 league appearances and recording four assists.
Last night’s hat-trick means he’s now opened up a four-goal lead over Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun.
Hazard scored 50 goals in 194 games before his impressive form earned him a move to Chelsea.
David has now surpassed that figure in 69 fewer games, and will hoping his new record earns him a similar move this summer.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Jonathan David, and his price tag keeps falling.
He was initially valued at £70m, but that price tag looks set to fall to around £40m this summer.
Tottenham have also reportedly set their sights on David in recent months, and both north London clubs could end up fighting over David.
The 23-year-old revealed he dreamed of playing in the Premier League one day, which will certainly help Arsenal’s pursuit of the forward
